This is why after reading all of these postings I have been thinking of exploring the ideas of using Handsonic 10 and instead of doing MIDI drum looping, consider an idea of looping audio coming out of Handsonic, using the same looper that would use for my guitar/bass loops (possibly Boss RC-50 (or some other looper, if there is a more suitable one?)) I would be interested to find out if anyone else is doing anything similar, and if so, what their setup is like. Using a single hardware looper for looping of live percussions/drums and guitar/bass (or other instruments that are not prerecorded or presequenced) but are played live and looped on the fly. I have a newer Echoplex digital pro plus (blackface, loop IV)with footswitch (white) enclosed in a heavy duty rack case. I would like to trade it for a Boss RC-50 plus cash. The rc-50 just seems more for what im into doing. My echoplex is in great shape. Only issue is that it is missing the output knob. However the pot works fine. The plastic knob part just fell off and I never bought a replacement. Never needed to.

Yikes Sandy, $1000? It would be the single most expensive piece of music gear I'd own. It's a little out of my league I'm afraid. Hopefully there's something cheaper that would do what I want.Maybe the Boss RC-50. That's about $500. I could possible swing that.I'm surprised it's not a standard feature in any looper that allows multiple loops and is performance oriented. Otherwise you are limited to using loops you've prerecorded or, if you want to stick with live loops, only using one stack of loops. I guess most of the time I've hear performers use loopers it seems to be used this way - one continuously building loop. Or they just use it as a backing track to solo over

Thanks Luis - your input has clarified, for me, my needs here. In response to your suggestion of just using a repeater and putting my pre-recorded bed track (containing all i can't reproduce live) onto one of the tracks: with a repeater, can the length of the individual tracks vary, while all is still tempo synced? For example, could I just toss a bed track onto channel 4 (let's say a 4 min long piece of audio), and then use the other 3 channels to create/start/stop/reverse loops while the 4 min piece plays from start to finish?and if this is possible, am i right to think that, on a 256mb flash card, i could fit a whole set's worth of bed tracks (whole songs minus what i create live)?thanks again to everyone who has offered input - very helpful. i am nearing a solution - i can feel it!: )> Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2008 15:38:45 -0800> From: labaloops@yahoo.com> Subject: RE: AW: looper + laptop interaction> To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com> > Hey Jesse,> just thought id pitch in,i use the EDP at times synced> to an Akai MPC1000, or the EDP as a slave, though if u> are using precanned loops then slaving the EDP is> probably the way you wanna go.> The way i do is:> MPC1000 midi out-FCB1010 footcontroller midi in/out-to> EDP> when you play a loop on the MPC1000(or any sampler)> you can just keep recording loops on the EDP, erase> them, rerecord new ones, add layers etc.by setting the> the midi merge function on the FCB1010 then sync out> on the MPC and sync in on the EDP they will syncronize> nicely to the loops from the sampler,as long as you> dont go to wild on the exotic functions of the EDP> like multiply/replace/reverse etc.(but realign or> retriggering can be ass-savers;-)> I find the other way around tighter, that is the EDP> being the master but then you would have to know the> bpm of the loop in advance and send it from the EDP so> they sync perfectly. But the EDP works great as a> master with a drum machine or preprogramed sequence> patterns.> The new O.S of the MPC1000 has a exciting new> functions like patch phrase and sample chopping which> takes an existing sample and divides it up to create> your own patterns, then you can assign the samples> original bass,snare,hi-hat and all the samples drum> sounds into your pads, that way if you use the EDP as a> master and redefine the loop to be shorter or> longer,or press half speed for ex.the sample will> follow your loops!> anyway this is just my hardware solution, but id love> to try the laptop route as well!> Luis> > > > > > --- Jesse Thom <jessethevessel@hotmail.com> wrote:> > > > > > > > > I forgot to mention that I'm on a mac. > > > > I'd actually prefer NOT to use a laptop and just> > keep it hardware based (looper + something that> > holds audio that can be organized / triggered).> > > > I'll have a look at the Roland and Akai products you> > mentioned and see if I can figure out how to sync> > one to a repeater (or what i've got right now - a> > boss RC-50)> > > > Thanks - any more info is welcome.> > : )> > > > > > > From: rs@moinlabs.de> > > To: Loopers-Delight@loopers-delight.com> > > Subject: AW: looper + laptop interaction> > > Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2008 19:49:40 +0100> > > > > > > I'm looking for the simplest way to have a> > hardware looper sync up with> > > pre-recorded audio on a laptop or other device.> > > > > > You may think about rephrasing your question and> > look for the simplest way> > > to sync a software looper with prerecorded audio> > on a laptop, if you already> > > are positive with the need for a laptop.> > > > > > If you prefer to stay hardware entirely, something> > like a Roland MC909 or> > > Akai MPC may be preferable (and then, depending on> > your feature needs,> > > either take a Repeater (if you need the pitch> > bending) or a Looperlative).> > > > > > If you want to use Ableton Live and use it on an> > XP machine, why not use> > > Mobius as a plugin in Live. Depending on what you want to perform, it may be worthwhile taking a look at the Boss RC-50 Looper:http://www.roland.com/products/en/RC-50/index.htmlIt doesn't have the feature set of the "real" loopers like Looperlative or Mobius. It allows you to run three stereo loops i.e. synced in parallel or independently in sequence. You can overdub each loop and use additional Aux Sends.Depending on how deep you want to dive into the looping world initially, it may be a worth considering as a "first looper".Per has provided a great page where you can compare features:http://www.looproom.com/looperchart.phpDon't get lost in gear & tech stuff ! ;-)Buzap-- Ist Ihr Browser

OK, so I have this dream of a tabletop looper that is actually designed to be used _on a tabletop_ and as a looper...think: JazzMutant Lemur crossed with Boss RC-50. The Korg Kaoss pad comes close in some respects, but I don't even use 75% of it's features, and the loops all have to be synchronized, and sometimes I do ambient things where I don't want everything on a grid. I had a Boss RC-50 for a while, which could do un-synched loops, but the interface wasn't right for me, too big, too many menus, etc... I know, I know... "Get the Lemur and build it in MAX!" you say, but I am NOT a software person. My current looping set-up is two Boss DD-20s into a Korg Kaoss pad, and with that I can get a lot of options covered, and even change loop lengths on the fly (albeit with some glitchy distortion), but if I could get a few more layers and few extra features (like changing loop start and end points on the fly, pausing and restarting individual loops in synched or un-synched ways) and all in one box (with a nice multi-touch-screen, prefereably), I would be all over it. I imagine that in the next few years, multi-touch-screens are going to become more common in music gear.

I like it far more than many on this site do. 3 stereo tracks of looping and 99 (at least in theory) of user phrases sold me!!!

Margaret,I used the RC-50 significantly on my last release without noise issues. I was very conscious about using the bare minimum gear required for a track in the signal path and not boosting either the input or output volume on the RC-50. Subject: Boss RC-50 sync issues 18:
Hello Everyone, this is my first post so you will all have to forgive me if I do or say something wrong! Moving on, I have recently upgraded from a DigiTech Jamman to a Boss RC-50. I have also acquired an Akai MPC 2500 which I would like to sync to the RC-50 via midi. I tried doing it this morning, and although both devices were set to transmit (MPC) and receive (RC50) midi data, the RC-50 would not recognize anything. I wouldn't sync to the tempo of the MPC, and it almost seemed like it wasn't receiving any information at all. The MPC has 4 Midi outs and perhaps the one I was using is not working, or it could be the cable, I will try weeding the things out later tonight.

Hi Jonathan,This was a very nice song, interesting textures in it, I would think this is the sort of looping that would sound good in a movie soundtrack.I am sorry but I am not familiar with the VE20 pedal and so cannot comment. One problem I hear is the audible switching which kind of detracts from the song. I have a Boomerang2 looper with silent switching which is nice, and from what others on the list say, the newer and better BoomerangIII is either released or near release. There is also another latest technology looper being released soon, the Looperlative LP2 which sounds like it will be awesome. If you are playing songs which contain many movements, then something like the Boss RC-50 may be what you want(it provides multiple loops), however in this case it

The Boomerang is a great machine and I've definitely enjoyed messing around with it, but I think the Boss RC-50 is much better. The audio quality/preservation of the RC-50 is definitely superior to Boomerang (and storing the loops is super awesome). I've had the RC-50 for two years now and the RC-20 for six. I vote Boss. 22:
I'm torn between the Boomerang 3 and the Boss RC-50. I've got a Boomerang Plus which I love, but I want stereo ins/outs so I can move my looper to the end of my signal chain. 201101/msg00628:RC-50 and sucking at syncing and some sucky customer service to boot
18:
Hello Folks,Posting here for the first time... I was compelled to after I spent several days trying to get my new Boss RC-50 to sync reliably. I thought that maybe some of you could benefit from my experience as well as see a glimpse into the lack of customer service @ Roland. Oh, I soooooo wish I was at NAMM right now so I could speak to them about this face to face.I'm sure many of you know of the lack of true master/slave sync in regards to this device and external midi clock. I, like many others, was compelled to get an RC-50 after learning there was a midi capable looper! It's advertised as such and I got swept up into the marketing of such a device as I've been looking for a quality looper for some time that I could sync to midi while running audio channels externally so they could go in/out of my guitar amp. I found the holy grail, or so I thought... up and bought it right there as I found a good deal on ebay.I spent a couple weeks with the looper getting this to work right. I did indeed read the manual quite a bit. Studied it. I'm familiar with gear and syncing. I was trying to sync the RC-50 to Ableton Live. Went through many settings on both the RC-50 and Live. ALMOST got it to sync as a true master / slave but what I found is that the clock would just not sync accurately. It would remain off by .1 or .2 midi beats which of course, is not SYNCHRONIZATION as the loops would drift after not too much time. As I am certain you fellow loopers would conclude, this is unacceptable! The looper needs to really sync reliably to work without drift. My goal was to be able to get multiple loops at lengths to which I desired to loop in sync with Live. I set Tempo Sync to OFF, Loop sync to OFF, Midi sync to AUTO and REMOTE.... same things...still the drift of .1 to .2, not always but well enough to not be reliable for live performance. Computer was sending midi clock to the looper.I tried tricking the device - setting up a empty loop on track 1 so that other tracks could quantize and sync to it... still no dice. It would consistently read the midi clock and pretty regularly be off by .1 - .2. Live definitely set up correctly. Other midi interfaces tried. Other computer tried. Didn't matter... not syncing. I read and read and read the manual.I tried running the RC-50 as the master and Live as the slave. Doing so this way caused Live's tempo to be all over the map.I finally emailed their customer support. I'll get to that in a second. Just after emailing their customer support, I perused Looper's Delight again and I got some ideas to try another approach.... which surprisingly worked! It's a major workaround, the device should not behave like this but this was the ONLY way I got the RC-50 to sync reliably. Here is how:On RC-50 - setup a patch that has a specific tempo of your sequence, say 125BPM. Store that tempo with the patch. Tempo Sync -- OFF OFF OFF. Loop Sync On/Off - experiment with this. Midi sync set to REMOTE. Pre-record a blank loop at the BPM that the RC-50 believes is correct. When set to REMOTE (even though this is counter-intuitive) the RC-50 still gets it's tempo from INTERNAL settings. WTF?!?! Ok. This gave me the idea though to set this up using the pre-recorded dummy empty loop at the specific tempo. Here is the part I was missing as again it seems counter-intuitive and does not explain well in the manual. In order for the RC-50 to sync correctly without drift, YOU HAVE TO USE THE GUIDE!!!! THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THAT THE RC-50 GETS RELIABLE TEMPO!!! Then you have this ugly problem of hearing their canned, crappy drums. How do you eliminate that? Set the guide to play out of the SUB OUTS (as long as you are not using them already) and then don't plug them in to speakers!!!! What happens is once you have this blank loop set, and REMOTE working properly (don't forget your midi settings in Live!), the RC-50 is tricked into playing at the correct tempo. You can then record other loops on the other tracks which will be quantized to your original silent loop and then will remain in sync. Get it? Yuck. I have never had such a difficult time getting midi gear to sync.Hope I explained it okay.. but it works, solidly... finally. When you start your sequence, you must have the empty loop track selected on the RC-50 so that when you start the sequencer, it triggers playback of the blank loop and then you can record to the other loops. It stays in sync as long as you still have a loop running. If you stop playback on the RC-50, forget it the loops will get out of sync. If you want silence in there, you still have to play the empty loop and keep the clock running. So, here is the part about their customer service. I emailed them trying to ask about this.. first of all they only give you about 300 characters in which to describe your problem (I do feel sorry for their support staff as a result of this) and you also get some less than stellar support once you do get any response from them. Here is what they said about the RC-50 and synchronization:"There would not be any way around this issue as sync requires very intensive realtime calculations, and the RC's brain has to crunch thousands of numbers per second on-the-fly when locking to external clock or when the the tempo is changed. The recording mode also has an effect, as stereo audio is twice as difficult to sync and/or time-shift than mono audio."- Are you kidding me? It's too complicated to work? Tell that to all the other midi manufacturers that get devices from varying manufacturers to work in sync all the time. And if this is the case, why do you advertise that this is a feature!?!? You think musicians won't notice? I have read on this forum and in other places that Roland is not likely to update their version 1.1 operating system any time soon (likely never).So... it seems that even Roland doesn't have a workaround like I came up with. I hope I explained this okay and that it helps some of you. I had a hard time finding info on this and had to piece it together from various sources.Best to all you loopers, sorry for the long post, but hoping this might help someone out there in loopland...ShaneTainted By Trollshttp://www.taintedbytrolls.com/
