Michael Preston
Age:39
Location:Baltimore, MD USA
Email Address(es):seepres@bcpl.net
Projects/Ensembles:Riffing-out, in the basement.
Instruments:bongos, guitars, sampler, synthesizers, marimbas, congas, turntables, tapes, computers, autoharp, psaltry, mandolin, violin, banjo, bass, voices, shakers, mbira
Looping Gear:twin Oberheim EDPs, Ecler DS-84, Lexicon Vortex, Lexicon MPX100, Digitech RDS4000, Boss GT-5 Powerbook with eMagic Logic Audio
Influences:Lately, I mostly like ambient, dubby, spacious, thought-provoking and thought-lulling, sound-scaping musics. I also am really wowed by stringed instrumental music that transcends genre, stands outside itself, makes some familiar sounds strange. Melodic percussion with discrete repetitive qualities rattles my cage. I have two young children, and I like to pay close attention to the music that seems to emotionally move them (right now [1/01] my four year old really likes to kick'it on the Yamaha DJX). I want to understand-and-make music that has the qualities which seem to move them, and draw them into making music.
Musical Style:ambient: in the sense that I am trying to get a bunch of ideas/sounds going at many levels without making too much, and consequently, not very much.
Recordings Available:I'm on a track of the 2nd Looper's Delight CD.
Thanks to all on the LD list who have contributed so much to my musical education over the last four or so years! Anyone out there in Baltimore looking for improvisational musical collaborators? Drop me a line, please.
