Mixing all genres from classical to jazz with general silliness, quasiMODAL fuses electronic and looping technologies as well as 'unusual' noise makers, creating textures, rhythms and soundscapes. .. 10:00 . Erik Laar is known best as an accomplished experimental turntablist/beat maker and Founder of Toronto's Off Centre DJ School. As a well seasoned performer he's toured around Canada/US in various forms accompanying bands and orchestras playing concert halls, museums, and arts spaces. His solo live show incorporates improvised live vocal loops, intricate turntable textures, and drum machine manipulation, a combination that often results in dreamy, celestial and atmospheric moods. The dark and brooding side of his production can also make an appearance, but mostly you can expect downtempo lullabies with clever drum sequencing and throbbing bass driven pulses with fragments of stirring lyrics. The balanced blend of live acoustic and electronic samples are what make his sound come to life. offcentredj.com // insideamind.net // circlesquaresound.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - COMiNG SOON: DRONE:KLUB . The NW LoopFest has come and gone. And 2017 could be the final NW LoopFest. It's been 5 years of electronic fun: new bands, new tech, new sounds. I'm not sure when I'll be back in the Pacific NW, if ever. The independent spirit is alive and well up there, but alas, there really isn't a community hanging together although the noise/experimental scene seems to be blossoming. And it's just too hard to try and run the thing when I've been gone 5 years and live 2,000 miles away. But at least the video archive will live on as a testament to the many artists who chose to participant. This year's festival was in Newport, OR and featured a lot of first time loopfest performers. The webpage can be found here: http://www.noahpeterson.com/nw_loopfest/ If you want skip all the verbage and just experience the vibe here's the playlist for all 48 videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmZwompN0w&list=PLjiWJF83CBinlgQ-W9p33aJtraH9Axo_a I was the opening performer. It was nice to actually play this year although I did short set. I debuted my new program "i sing the sax electric" which focuses less on structure and tunes and is more riff and beat based with the addition of some tech. I've enjoyed the "Solo Sax Sessions" but I had been feeling quite stale with it for some time. This was the beginning of a new direction for my own looping which I've been enjoying ever since. Here's my two videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmZwompN0w&list=PLjiWJF83CBikR61t-83xrIlObqBwvipd9 Next up was Stargasm from Portland, OR. For a long time, I thought that we are the only looping forum, but if there are other ones, then I'm glad to know about them. I haven't been doing much looping lately; I've been on this mailing list just in case something cool comes up, but lately I've been drifting away from the looping and have been working with sampling; if you know what a plunderphonic sound collage is, then you know what I mean. But looping is great! But, I'm sorry to say, most work you will hear from me in the future will be more about sample collage than live looping; when I discovered the site, I was originally picturing the looping of existing samples, not live looping; when I heard the live looping, I was amazed, so I stayed on the list, but technically I'm more of a sampling artist.
