Some great info on this thread...many different approaches.

I used to know a sound engineer who used a cheap boombox as the final test 
of his mixes. After all his work with expensive reference monitors, mixing 
techniques, software,  etc, if there was a serious problem with a 
frequency 
or level, it would show up on the cheap box.
